I have always had a hard time ranking my favourite singles and albums by my favourite artists, but I have been thinking... I can at least name my top 5 singles by each artist, right?!
So I have made it a challenge to make a blog post every day of my top 5 singles by my favourite artists! Starting with...
Utada Hikaru!
The woman who got me into J-Pop and the Queen of my Heart.
And the person who I consider to be the God of J-Pop
#5 - Flavor of Life
It's no wonder all of Japan absolutely loved this song when it first came out! Beautiful melody, and the ballad version is incredible! Not to mention it shows off Hikki's awesome low voice in the verses. The instrumental is gorgeous as well.
#4 - Wait & See ~Risk~
The opening of this song is incredibly EPIC. Seriously. A very good attention grabber. One of my favourite songs of Hikki when she was still more R&B than pop. The PV is also really good and futuristic. It's just an amazing song overall.
#3 - SAKURA Drops / Letters
SAKURA Drops... one of the first Japanese Hikki songs I fell in love with. Again, a beautiful instrumental. Also, although we all know Hikki is an alto and she doesn't do high notes very well, they sound great in this song! The way she sings them... they're obviously not as strong as her lower notes, but they sound pretty. Very colorful PV, too. This is also when Hikki went all ~ethereal~ with DEEP RIVER, and it's my favourite point in her career.
As for Letters, I actually used to like this song more than SAKURA Drops, although that has now changed. Still love it to bits, though.
#2 - Addicted to You
Ahhh, Hikki's best-selling single, and for good reason, too. Still in her R&B period, this song is kind of fierce and Hikki gets her groove on in the PV! The beats in this song are awesome, and the chorus is so darn catchy! It's a fantastic song and classic Hikki.
And finally.... #1... Drum roll please!

This song... oh my gosh. There are no words to describe how much I love it. Whenever I hear that opening my heart begins to beat faster. Hikki's vocals are top-notch here, and her voice, the melody, and the instruments in the background during the verses make me shiver... and then comes the chorus. That amazing chorus! Like I said, no words to describe how much I love it, although I honeslty think the verses are the best part of the song.... the instrumental breaks, too, are awesome. I am a sucker for awesome instrumentals in songs, and this doesn't fail to please! Especially the ending...
